We've all been depressed or anxious about something: a situation, a person, or a missed opportunity. Those feelings can't be measured but they can be managed. There are strategic steps you must take to keep your balance and avoid falling into a rut where you feel stuck. In this episode, Dr. mOe, with the help of psychiatrist Dr. Brian Dixon, shares 5 steps to create daily happiness. 1. Reset your mind. From the Bible to billboard, the technique of making affirming statements is used to build self-esteem. Positive words combat negative thoughts. Think of affirmations as a bat you use to swing at harmful thoughts that are flung at you like a baseball. Keep swinging until the game ends and your mind is at rest. 2. Don't be distracted into doing nothing. Mindless eating, drinking, channel surfing, and social media often numbs us into feeling powerless to do anything at all. Get up. Stay vertical. Blast daylight on the darkness and complete a small, simple task several times a day to rebuild your confidence. Give yourself a time limit within which to complete the task! 3. Let it go. You cannot control everything and everyone around you. You cannot save everyone. If you're drowning, help yourself. It takes a fist to hang on to an anchor. Let go. Open your hands and swim to emotional safety. 4. Stop looking back. Your future is not in your past. It takes practice to break a bad habit. Practice not calling,Ā not stalking, and not asking for updates.Ā 5. Small wins count. Your role doesn't have to be glamorous or high profile to be important. Give yourself some grace. Review. Renew. Re-you!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/perpetual-moetion-with-dr-moe-anderson--5831364/support.

Weather Proofing Is A Top Relationship Killer
May 26, 2021

Affirmation is the key to successful leadership and relationships. Like a fancy fitness tracker, the key to functioning communication is pressing the right buttons in the right order. Verbal blows and weatherproofing do nothing but build walls of resentment.Ā In this episode, learn what weatherproofing means and why looking for the positive aspects in others is a better way to build trust. Transcript: I havenāt always been good at taking compliments and Iāll go out on a limb and say most American women arenāt very good at accepting praise. We like it, no doubt, but, then, we donāt know what to do. And I am talking about appropriate āatta girlsā not harassment during the company picnic. The appropriate response to a few kind words is a simple, āThank you. Thatās very kind of you to say.ā Instead, we make statements like, āThis old thing? Iāve had this dress forever,ā or āNah, itās not a big deal. I broker mergers between Fortune 500 companiesā Why do we do this? Affirmation is a good thing. (read article) On the other hand, we often fall short in the compliment-giving area. There is nothing wrong with praising someone for doing a good job. We need to compliment each other a whole lot more than we do. If your co-worker has a nice new haircut, tell her. If your son took the time to iron his wrinkled shirt, tell him he looks nice even if he only ironed the cuffs and the collar. Maybe heāll iron the entire shirt next time. Again, itās important to understand the effect of praise. Research has proven that praise, as opposed to criticism, leads to more of the positive behavior. Iām on this tip because I was a weather-proofer for most of my life. When you weather proof a home, you go through it looking for every thing thatās wrong. You find windows that donāt seal properly. You check to ensure thereās enough insulation in the attic. You look for light seeping through cracks around the entry doors; an indication you need to add weather stripping. You pour over every square foot to see where youāre losing energy. In my advancing age, LOL, Iāve learned itās just as important to look at the good things in my home. Itās beneficial to my mind and spirit to notice what is working properly. This applies to homesā¦and relationships. We need to seek balance between the praise we give our loved ones and the criticism we hurl at them. We need to spend much more time talking about whatās working properly in our relationships. Iāve come to believe that people are like my fitness tracker. Itās midrange in price and the design is simple. However, itās much more complicated than it appears. Whenever, I decide to try an activity thatās outside my normal cardio routine like rowing for example. I try to change the function on the face of the watch. Invariably, I forget the peculiar combination of buttons and taps to change the time. I get mad at the thing and yell at it. I tell my Fitbit that itās wrong and Iām going to replace it. Sometimes, I hit it. It doesnāt change. In order to get the fitness tracker to change on the outside, I must change the inside. I canāt do that by randomly pushing buttons. I have to push the right buttons, in the right order. Once, I get into the āheartā of the watch, I change the ābehaviorā of the watch. In other words, it responds favorably to my wishes. I react the same way and I suspect you do, too. If someone (manager, neighbor, or relative) communicates with me in the right way to me, Iām willing to help them. I want to help them. Yelling or hitting me doesnāt make me want to do anything but leave. Perhaps this works for everyone. Maybe if we show each other more appreciation, weāll get along better. Iām willing to try.
